Taylor Hall signs with Sabres in free agent stunner
Taylor Hall tossed everyone a curveball.
The free agent winger stunned the NHL on Sunday night when he agreed to a $ 8 million one-year deal with the Buffalo Sabers.
The contract also reportedly includes a no-trade and no-movement clause.
His entire free agent saga was centered around Stanley Cup competitors like Colorado, Boston, Nashville, and even a possible reunion with his original team in Edmonton.
But in the end, it was the Sabers who got him on a short-term deal.
There he is reunited with Ralph Krueger, one of his head coaches from his time in Edmonton. The two had a great relationship there and last December Hall spoke highly of the coach.
Everything about this signature is just absolutely wild. It's no great surprise that Hall signed a short-term deal as it was reported that he was considering it. It was just always assumed that he would sign with a team that seemed closer to the competition. The Sabers missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for nine consecutive seasons and even came up short when they restarted this year's field of 24 teams.
And that's what makes the Sabers so surprising.
Hall has spent his entire career in Edmonton, New Jersey, and Arizona, playing on only two playoff teams in 10 years.
This is a short-term deal only, so this could be about increasing its value and doing another run with the unrestricted free agency in a year that may be more money-making.
The Sabers are a huge asset to new General Manager Kevyn Adams. There is no way you can blame him for putting a player like this on that contract, and if the Sabers have trouble again he'll have to use a potentially massive trading chip by the deadline (assuming it's a deal, the Hall approved with his no). Trade protection).
You also have to think that it's kind of a message to Jack Eichel that the team feels obliged to try to win, at least in the short term.
Eichel is frustrated with the defeat in Buffalo and is determined to win there. Now he may be allowed to play alongside an MVP and one of the best wingers in the league, while Hall plays alongside one of the best centers he's ever had.
