Taylor Swift's "Mr. Perfectly Fine" Has a Connection to One of Her Most Beloved Songs Ever
Taylor Swift surprised her fans with new music last year, and just days before the release of Fearless (Taylor's version), she did it again. On Wednesday morning, Swift unexpectedly released "Mr. Perfectly Fine," one of the unreleased songs from the album's re-recording vault, and fans quickly realized that there was indeed a connection to one of their favorite tunes.
For those in need of a recap, Swift is re-recording their entire pre-lover discography, adding new songs to the albums along the way - tracks that were written and recorded during the era of each album that ultimately didn't make it to the finals Cut. Along with "You All Over Me," which was released last month, Swift has now dropped "Mr. Perfectly Fine" before Fearless arrives in full on Friday.
Now that the new song is out, fans have the chance to listen to it. It's about getting over a breakup (similar to many of Swift's previous songs) and it sounds exactly like how she would have written and recorded it in 2008. However, fans on Twitter have also noticed that it has a certain phrase that we wouldn't hear her use in their lyrics again until two albums later.
"Hello, Mr. Casually Cruel," Swift sings in unison. "Everything is about you."
Casually cruel. As in "Casually Cruel in the Name of Honesty," one of their most iconic lyrics in "All Too Well," the Swift ballad to end all of the Swift ballads from their Red album. She must have known the leash was too good to stay in the safe long beforehand! And obviously everyone is freaking out.
* And * fans kind of assume this song is about ex-Flame Joe Jonas (the timing is right), but the best part is that Jonas' current wife, Sophie Turner, seems totally chilled with the whole thing. She shared "Mr. Perfectly Fine" on her Instagram stories today, writing, "It's not a bop."
And of course, Swift responded immediately by sharing Turner's Instagram story with her own Instagram story, noting that she would always bend the knee to the Queen in the North!
We love supportive and civil exes and friends and new partners!
With how catchy and funny (yet heartbreaking) "Mr. Perfectly Fine" is, the other Vault tracks that fans haven't heard seem to be failing anyone. The countdown to Fearless (Taylor's version) is on and it's worth the wait.
