Tennis-'I can't control God': Venus fumes after heavy winds force time violation

(Reuters) - A fighting Venus Williams got more than she expected in the form of divine intervention when high winds led to a controversial time violation when they beat Anna Schmiedlova 5-7: 6-2 at the Emilia-Romagna Open : 6: 2 lost in Parma on Monday.
After losing the first set 7-5 despite 5-2, the 40-year-old Williams lost control of the match when high winds forced her to take time to serve, resulting in a time injury and a confrontation with the chair umpire.
"I can't control God," Williams told the referee after going down 4-1 in the second set. "I'm just saying the wind is blowing and there is nothing I can do about it.
"I can't control God, talk to him," added the former world number one, pointing a finger up before going back to baseline.
Williams lost her momentum as her number of casual mistakes continued to rise and a brief resurgence of decision maker Schmiedlova didn't prevent her fourth straight win over the American in two hours and 39 minutes.
While Williams forgot a day as she continued to look out for her first clay court win this season, her younger sister and top seed Serena improved after beating teenage qualifiers Lisa Pigato 6-3 and 6-2.
"Lisa played really well," said Serena. "She told me she is only 17 years old. Her future is super bright, she handled the moment well, so I look forward to cheering her on in the future."
