Tennis-Swiatek demolishes Pliskova to claim Rome crown

(Reuters) The French Open champion Iga Swiatek warned her rivals of the Grand Slam on the clay court with a 6-0: 6-0 demolition of the former number 1 in the world, Karolina Pliskova, in the final of the Italian Open on Sunday.
The 46 minute win meant the world number 15 from Poland, who rose to fame at Roland Garros last year by beating Sofia Kenin in straight sets in the final, will make it into the top 10 for the first time when the new leaderboard is on Monday will be released.
Swiatek's third overall victory after triumphs at Roland Garros and Adelaide was due to one of the most dominant performances of the 19-year-old's career, when she lost just 13 points against the Czech, who became champion in Rome in 2019.
"I'm really excited to win this tournament in Rome. It's been a tough week from the start," said Swiatek, who won her quarter-finals and semi-finals in straight sets on Saturday after being postponed due to rain.
"I'm really glad I got through it all and I was really focused today, so I'm proud of myself. Now I finally deserve some tiramisu."
She served with ruthless accuracy, gaining more than 93% of the points on her first serve, and converting six out of eight breakpoint opportunities to end the win against a frustrated Pliskova who had no answers that day.
It was also the first double bagel in the final of the Rome tournament and the most one-sided since Andrea Temesvari from Hungary defeated the American Bonnie Gadusek 6-1 and 6-0 in 1983.
The French Open starts on May 30th.
