The automatic reversing system on some vehicles' windows may not function properly if there is an obstacle in the way, an NHTSA filing said.
The NHTSA said 1,096,762 Tesla vehicles could have the fault.
Some Model 3s manufactured between 2017 and 2022, Model Ys manufactured between 2020 and 2021, and certain Model Ss and Model Xs manufactured between 2021 and 2022 may be affected by the issue, according to the filing.
The vehicles in question "do not meet" the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard about power windows, NHTSA said in the filing.
The problem was first discovered in August, according to an NHTSA non-compliance document. When closing, the window may apply more force than required before it retracts. According to the document, this could pose a safety risk of a "pinch injury" for the driver or passenger.
Tesla is not aware of any reports, injuries or deaths related to the failure of its automatic windows, the document said.
NHTSA said in the filing that Tesla expects to provide a free software update for the automatic window reversing system.
Tesla did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
