Tesla tries to calm China camera spying fears

Tesla took to Chinese social media on Wednesday (April 7) to address safety concerns.
The automaker said on Weibo that cameras in its vehicles will not activate outside of North America, adding "even in the United States, car owners are free to choose whether to turn on their use."
Tesla is under scrutiny in China, where entering military complexes is banned, according to Reuters sources, amid concerns that cameras on the vehicles could be used for spying.
However, the electric car pioneer says its systems offer world-class security and privacy protection.
At a virtual forum in Beijing in March, not long after reports of the ban, Tesla founder Elon Musk emphasized the company's business motives to protect user privacy.
He said, "There is a very strong incentive for us to be very confidential with information. If Tesla spies on cars in China or elsewhere, we will be shut down."
China is a key market for electric vehicles. Tesla sold 30% of its global total there last year.
