Tested: 2021 Bentley Flying Spur V-8 Oozes of Coin

A decade ago, it would have been hard to imagine that a little bit of coin mined by computers would ever have been anything. What matters is this: The Flying Spur has a shockingly good launch control system. Simply select the sport mode, brake and accelerate on the soft carpet and release the brakes while holding the accelerator. The four-wheel drive Bentley pushes forward. The Cumbrian Green leather is shaped by swirls, a shade apparently inspired by a train toy soldier. Start after start, the drive train swallows the misuse. You'd think the axle half-waves could explode, but they don't. The greatest threat is to the 50-year-old Scotch that may be stashed in the back seat compartment. Of course there is also a refrigerator. Make sure you secure your valuable cargo.
The Flying Spur V-8 catapults itself to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and thus corresponds to the time of the W-12. Stay in and the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts through gears on the way to a quarter mile of 12.0 seconds at 115 mph, just 0.3 seconds and 5 mph behind the W-12. Top speed is a claimed 198 mph. For roughly the cost of a base Honda Accord, the W-12's premium makes little sense unless exclusivity is important. A common perception is that the Bentley lifestyle is a place where you are chauffeured. While it is possible to adjust the ambient lighting of the interior from the massive rear seat, the best Bentley experience happens behind the steering wheel. The Flying Spur floats along the interstates like a yacht flying over a calm sea. Serene and sleek, as you'd expect from a Bentley, only the rudest of asphalt trips over the 22-inch wheels, and even then, the hits are more audible than felt. A purring V-8 in the distance and the slightest gust of wind remind you that the outside world still exists.

True to Bentley's racing heritage, the Flying Spur has the uncanny ability to transform itself from a rolling day spa into a five-star amusement ride. In addition to the engine, a large part of the chassis technology is borrowed from Porsche, Audi and Lamborghini. The steering feels like it's been plucked straight from a proper sports sedan, and the $ 7,730 Bentley Dynamic Ride option comes with active 48-volt stabilizers that keep the body flat in Nebraska. The rear steering shrinks this 209.3-inch car into parking lots and also stabilizes the rear end when cornering. Sit in this 5,474 pound beast and it will dance. Even on year-round rubber, the 0.94 g Flying Spur stuck to the skid pad, and the all-wheel drive system with rear-wheel drive even allows you to take part in glaring drifts that make you grin from ear to ear. When it's time to stop the madness, 10-piston calipers clamp onto huge 16.5-inch front rotors that can bring the track to a standstill in a respectable 30 meters from a speed of 100 km / h.
