Texas Governor Greg Abbott defended the state's decision to hold an election review of the 2020 presidential results at the request of former President Donald Trump, despite overwhelming evidence that the former president safely won the state.
Trump sent Abbott a letter last week calling for an election exam claiming "Texans know that electoral fraud has occurred in some of their counties". The Texas Secretary of State responded by confirming that he would conduct a "comprehensive forensic" review of the results in four of the state's largest counties: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Collin. President Joe Biden won all but Collin County.
Fox News host Chris Wallace urged Abbott, a Republican who is running for re-election in 2022, on the issue on Fox News Sunday, noting that Trump has safely won the state by hundreds of thousands of votes.
"Isn't it just a terrible waste of taxpayers' money to conduct an audit in a state that everyone says went well and won President Trump with 600,000 votes, and you are not adding to confidence in our electoral process Wallace asked.
"There are exams for every aspect of government," Abbott said. "Why are we scrutinizing everything in this world, but people raise their hands in concern when we scrutinize elections, which is fundamental to our democracy?"
Abbott went on to say that election exams were already underway, although Wallace found the exams in the last four counties were new and initiated "within hours" of Trump's letter.
“We know that regardless of the outcome of these exams, Donald Trump will still have won the state of Texas. However, we have allegations of illegal voting every year, including in the 2020 election, ”said Abbott.
He added that the state had a "responsibility to ensure the integrity and confidence" of the elections. Abbott critics have suggested he bowed to pressure from the former president.
Of the dozen lawsuits that Trump and his team filed against the 2020 election results, none have been successful. In December 2020, Attorney General William Barr said the Justice Department and the FBI had found no evidence of widespread election fraud.
