Texas Governor: Coronavirus Spreading at ‘Unacceptable Rate’ in State
Governor Greg Abbott warned Monday that coronavirus is now spreading at an "unacceptable rate" in Texas, and asked residents to wear masks in public and continue to practice social distancing.
"To put it bluntly, COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas and it needs to be corrected," Abbott said at a press conference.
Texas saw more than 25,000 new coronavirus cases last week, and set a daily record of 4,600 new positive cases on Friday. The increase in cases is due to the fact that Texas allowed companies with a 75 percent capacity to reopen earlier this month.
Abbott urged the public to take precautions against the spread of the virus even when people return to work and visit public places. However, he did not announce new rules for social distancing.
“Wearing a mask helps us keep Texas open. If no action is taken to slow the spread, COVID will spread even further, putting people's lives at risk and ultimately leading to the closure of more businesses, ”Abbott said.
"The way hospital stays are increasing, as are daily new cases - surely the public can understand that additional measures will be needed to ensure that we maintain the health and safety of Texas people," the governor added .
Texas has had an average of more than 3,200 coronavirus hospitalizations per day in the past few days. This is a sharp increase from the second half of May, when around 1,600 people were hospitalized every day for the virus. Abbott suggested that if these numbers double again, the state may reintroduce social distance restrictions.
"If we saw a further doubling of these numbers next month, it would mean that we are in an urgent situation where more stringent measures are needed to ensure that we curb the spread of COVID-19," Abbott said .
