Texas police release statement on shoot-out near Dallas captured in viral video
A lawyer for Charles Williams says they released security footage to tell his side of the story
A video of a February shooting between police officers and a citizen in suburban Dallas has gone viral on social media.
The dissemination of the footage on the Internet prompted Corinth police to issue an official statement on the incident on Friday.
As reported by KTVT, officers responded to a report of a drunk driver when they contacted Charles Williams, Jr. The person reporting the claim to the police chased driver Williams to his house and the police arrived in his driveway shortly afterwards.
Screenshots of Charles Williams, Jr. and Corinth police officers involved in a shooting at Williams' suburban Dallas home.
In the video captured by a home security camera on the front porch of the house, Williams can be seen talking to and fro with the officers. The officers called out to him to go to the ground because he had a gun on his waist. Williams refused.
William's wife then came out on the porch. Williams then clapped his hands as he approached the officers from his porch, who responded by firing a gun at Williams.
The authorities say it was a beanbag round. Williams then picked up his gun, walked behind his parked trunk in the driveway, and began firing back at the officers before falling to the ground.
The video of the scene was posted on YouTube on Thursday.
The WFAA reported that Williams was hit by a bullet fired by one of the officers.
No officers were injured and Williams survived. One woman was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Williams was later charged with three counts of grievous bodily harm to a police officer, but according to his attorney Justin Moore, Williams claims he was not drunk.
“This is clearly a man in his house who is being approached and addressed by law enforcement for reasons he can't really understand. And he's scared, ”Moore told KTVT. "If you see the video we have, he didn't have a gun in his hand."
Moore posted the video on social media so Williams' side of the story could be told. After the Corinthian police went viral, they made an official statement on their Facebook page saying that "Williams was immediately hostile and threatening to the officers".
The statement continued: “We are extremely proud of the courage and compassion of our officers who first stopped a murderous attack and then took immediate and successful life-saving measures against Williams. We look forward to seeing Charles Williams Jr. in court when the full details of his attempt to kill cops in Corinth are released. "
