Texas takes first official step in changing conferences, sends letter to Big 12
Where there is smoke there is fire.
The past few days have been a whirlwind of reports that Texas and Oklahoma were keen to leave the Big 12 to join the SEC. The first official step was taken on Monday to support these claims.
The Longhorns and Sooners each sent a letter to the Big 12 informing them that they will not renew the grant, which currently expires in 2025. However, don't expect the two powerhouse programs to stay in the Big 12 until 2025.
Texas and Oklahoma could meet their contractual obligations and do not have to pay anything, but money does not seem to be an issue for either side and a change as soon as the 2022 or 2023 season is quite possible.
“It is important to inform the Big 12 at this point before the current conference media rights agreement expires. The universities intend to fulfill their existing rights granting agreements. However, both universities will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving college sports landscape as they ponder how best to plan their athletics programs for the future. "
The next step in the process is for Texas to officially request the SEC to join. As I am sure you all know, the Longhorns 11 of the 14 schools should vote yes, i. that is, if four programs vote no, they would refuse to expand.
Getting enough votes doesn't seem to be a problem as only Texas A&M appears to be against the move.
