Teyana Taylor Tops Maxim's Hot 100 List, Becomes First Black Woman At No. 1 Spot
Teyana Taylor, who Maxim recently dubbed the "sexiest woman alive," topped the publication's "Hot 100" list for 2021 and became the first black woman to do so.
The singer, actor and dancer celebrated the award on Monday on Instagram and wrote: "Somebody pinch me !!!!"
"WOW ... stepping back in front of the lens was a journey of self-reflection and self-confidence," she wrote in the caption of the post. "To do justice to the name and title of this shoot with all my heart made me nervous."
Taylor, who shares two daughters with her husband, professional basketball player Iman Shumpert, noted later in the post that her busy lifestyle often robs her of time to "feel sexy".
She said she came to the photoshoot after dropping her 5-year-old daughter Junie at school and that the sweatpants and hat she was wearing appeared on the shoot.
"Embrace and love yourself for who [and] what you are because only the purest heart shines through," she added later.
Maxim announced Taylor as his "Hot 100" coverstar on Monday, hailing her as "a graceful choreographer-dancer, actor-director and top ten recording star." According to an archive of the publication's former award winners from 2000, she is the first black woman to land at number 1 on the list.
Recent winners include Olivia Culpo in 2019, Kate Upton in 2018 and Hailey Baldwin in 2017.
When Lindsay Lohan topped the list in 2007, The Associated Press magazine said its rankings, created by Maxim editors, are considered the buzz and beauty for women in film, television, music, sports, and fashion.
"There is no other star in the world (who) attracts more public attention than Lindsay," said Jimmy Jellinek, then Maxim's editor-in-chief at the time.
In 2018, the magazine said its list celebrated more than just physical beauty and also honored women who are "multiple hyphens, entrepreneurs, and risk takers."
"Now, more than ever, we need to celebrate smart, powerful women who push the boundaries (and look damn good doing it)," the statement said.
People on social media this week wondered why a black woman hadn't topped the list earlier.
Jemele Hill, contributing writer for the Atlantic, called this fact "pathetic" - and other Twitter users shared similar views:
Taylor told Maxim in her cover story that she had long introduced herself as the magazine's cover star.
"I've been following Maxim for a long time and always felt like I should be on the cover," she said. “So actually getting the call that they wanted me on the cover really meant a lot. I thought, 'What? You want me on the cover? OK!'"
Taylor recently appeared in Coming 2 America, the 2021 sequel to the original 1988 classic Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones and Shari Headley.
The singer, who released her latest album entitled "The Album" last year, has a number of projects in the works.
Taylor and Shumpert, who welcomed their second daughter Rue Rose in September, will be featured in an upcoming E! Reality series about her life entitled "We Got Love Teyana & Iman".
She also told Maxim that she was working on developing a series about music legend Dionne Warwick.
"I want to make sure she approves and is comfortable with everything before we move on," she said of the Walk on By singer. "That was the most important thing for me to really learn from each other and know what she wants and make sure her story comes out of her own mouth instead of getting people to change their narrative."
