The #1 Unhealthiest Tea on the Planet

Americans' relationship with tea has always been complex, to say the least. From unloading in Boston Harbor to casting off while grilling on a hot summer's day, our attitude towards drink is really evolving. And, given the staggering number of tea options on the market today, it can be difficult to know which to prefer and which to avoid at all costs. Especially avoid the most unhealthy tea in the world.
We spoke to nutritionist Ella Davar, RD, CDN, and asked her a simple question: what is the most unhealthy tea you can drink and why?
Here's what she had to say, and for more healthy tips, be sure to check out our list of the 7 Healthiest Foods You Should Eat Right Now.
The most unhealthy tea to avoid
Her answer was loud. Arizona Tea, an all-American favorite, is officially the brand to avoid while wandering the tea aisle.
Davar mentioned their classic options as well as some specialties. She first pointed to her 16.9-ounce bottle of lemon tea, which contains 45 grams of sugar per can. The Arizona Southern Style Tea was also honored as it contains 43 grams of sugar. Davar did the math for us - that many grams of sugar make more than 11 teaspoons! Imagine swallowing 11 spoons of sugar. This is what you ingest when you sip Arizona Tea.
But while we all know that sugar is not a healthy food, why is there such concern?
"Sugar is the leading cause of chronic metabolic diseases like heart disease and high blood pressure," Davar said. "Consuming too much added sugar increases risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, high blood pressure and inflammation."
We compared Davar's picks with our own list of the most unhealthy teas and found that based on total sugar content, Arizona is definitely the tea to get rid of from your diet ASAP. Perhaps the brand's scariest offering? Your peach-flavored iced tea that contains 69 grams of sugar (120% of your recommended daily allowance).
While tea may seem like a healthy, ancient drink, the modern American spin doesn't always meet nutritional standards. Instead, enjoy one of these 12 healthiest teas on grocery store shelves.
