The Bachelorette 's Ben Smith Gets Candid About Tayshia Adams' Engagement to Zac Clark
A day after the world experienced a second round of heartbreak with Tayshia Adams at their The Bachelorette finale, Ben Smith shares his thoughts with another famous Bachelor Nation runner-up.
Ben was a guest on Nick Viall's podcast, The Viall Files, on Wednesday December 23rd, where he talked about how he watched the finals and first found out while watching the episode on TV that Tayshia was up for it Zac Clark was engaged.
"It's hard to see how you go through this," said the army veterinarian. "But I'm so happy with how it ended. I'm so happy for Tayshia, I'm so happy for Zac. Zac and I have been close throughout the experience ... you can see they are happy together . The fact that they're still together is incredible in and of itself. "
Ben said that while the result was not what he originally hoped for, he was still incredibly grateful for what the show did for him. As viewers recall, he had some incredibly emotional moments with Tayshia, reading up on his past eating disorder struggles and past suicide attempts.
"I have this peace around the whole experience and holy cow, I came out of it with so much growth and so much experience," he said. "And I'm a newer, better, more complete version of myself, and that's why I'm incredibly grateful and happy. And I just have this peace of mind about the whole experience."
Bachelor in Paradise's Most Shocking Breakups
Ben was sent home after visits to his hometown after hesitating to express his love for Tayshia, but he famously returned and was given a second chance to make things work before it eventually cut him in the finals. Looking back at his time, the West Point graduate found that his connection with the Bachelorette wasn't as strong as Zac's.

"I was in the camp of being: there is no way another guy could have the same experience as me," he admitted. "But when I look at it now I see: Oh my god Ben, dude. Your relationship was one thing and it was playful and fun, and I can see that connection that we had, but it's pretty obvious that there was a deeper bond and ultimately a deeper connection with Zac. You can see their chemistry, you can see how they play against each other. "
Ben, who told Nick that it has been over a year since he had an off-show date, said he was worried about returning because he was afraid he would get over her who had previously turned him down. But given the strength of his feelings, Ben knew he had to take his shot, mostly because she had helped him on his personal journey.
“I came to meet a girl, to learn about myself and maybe restore my confidence in humanity, and I got all of these things which is crazy for me,” he continued. "The reason I fell in love with her was because of the way she made me feel. She had space for me. She created a space where I can be open and vulnerable. And it was safe and it was safe, and she didn't. " I don't run and she hasn't chastised me, and all she does is receive me. And I'm grateful for that and I'm incredibly grateful for the experience. "
