The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating an outbreak that is "likely" related to packaged salads sold at Aldi, Jewel-Osco, and Hy-Vee.
Agencies issued a warning late last week warning customers that Aldi Little Salad Bar Brand, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad from Hy-Vee, and Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad from Jewel-Osco were suspected stand to be associated with an outbreak of Cyclospora. Both Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco recalled these products made by Fresh Express this week, and CDC and FDA advised customers in certain states not to eat the above salads from all three retailers.
The Hy-Vee Brand Garden salads were sold in stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Jewel-Osco Signature Farms branded garden salads were sold in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, and the Aldi Little Salad Bar branded garden salads were sold in stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri. More information on the countries concerned and recalls can be found here.
Jewel-Osco said it was recalling the salads "in association with the Fresh Express recall of packaged salads that may be related to an outbreak of Cyclospora infection." Aldi informed the FDA that the salad had been removed from the shelves. The investigation is ongoing.
Cyclospora is described as a microscopic parasite that can infect your intestinal tract and cause loose stools. The outbreak caused 76 people in six states (Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska) to fall ill and 16 of them were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
