The King of Saudi Arabia Is Traveling to Indonesia With 506 Tons of Luggage
The King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdul Aziz, is traveling to Indonesia this week - and his luggage is not light. According to The Washington Post, King Salman visits the country along with 506 tons of cargo, which is roughly the equivalent of 240 elephants or 300 cars.
It is the first time in 46 years that a Saudi king has visited the country, and he gives everything. Among the huge booty there is quite a bit of luxury: King Salman will not only travel in two Mercedes-Benz S600 sedans, but will also bring his own vertical means of transport in the form of two electric elevators.
With the king's luggage exceeding even the most liberal hand luggage policy, transporting the cargo is of course a considerable undertaking in its own right. Adji Gunawan of air cargo company PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta (JAS) reportedly told Antara News Agency that his company employed 572 workers to effectively organize the transportation of the Saudi cargo.
It's not just his luggage that is big. The Saudi king also takes a massive retinue with him on the nine-day trip. According to The Jakarta Post, around 1,500 people will make the trip, including 10 ministers, 25 princes and at least 100 security guards.
As dramatic as it may seem, the grandiose style of travel is nothing new to Saudi kings. In 2015, King Salman and a 1,000 entourage reportedly upset a local mayor on the French Riviera after attempting to build an elevator in the sand of a local beach without permission. That same year, on a visit to Washington D.C. the total of the 222 rooms

King Salman's trip to Indonesia comes as economic ties between the country and Saudi Arabia regain importance. The king will also travel to Japan, China, the Maldives and Jordan. We only ask ourselves: what is in the king's hand luggage?
