The Morning After: More Mars pictures, videos and sound

Spotify divides its ambitions between podcasts and music. For the latter, it is a high fidelity service that will be available later this year. The company has been testing this idea since 2017. Spotify's current maximum audio bitrate is 320 kbps, but bitrates for lossless audio can be dramatically higher - think 1,411 kbps - allowing music files to reproduce the nuances of the recording .
Spotify will join services like Tidal and Amazon Music that already have a high fidelity audio offering, but there is no word on exactly how much the new service will cost. Instead of Spotify even more premium, the company calls it Spotify HiFi.

During yesterday's Spotify Stream On event, the company also announced that it has exclusive rights to a new podcast featuring former President Barack Obama and musician Bruce Springsteen. The eight-episode series, titled Renegades: Born in the USA, explores topics such as "Race, Fatherhood, Marriage and the Future of America". The first two episodes are now available on Spotify.
Those were perhaps the two main stories for Engadget readers, but the company also announced that it is planning to launch in 85 new markets that could bring the service to more than a billion additional people. Given the threats posed by some of the largest tech companies in the world, Spotify is keen to gain a foothold in more countries and, if local tastes suit, beat the richer and stronger competition.

Watch NASA's persistence land on Mars
And some new pictures from Mars.
Mars Perseverance Rover
After showing early photos of Perseverance's safe descent to the surface last week, the agency released video footage of the critical moments of the landing. It all starts seven miles above the surface of Mars when Percy's (yes, that's the rover's nickname) heat shield falls off on the descent. And if you ever wanted to know what the surface of Mars sounded like, the rover could also send a few audible seconds of breeze off the red planet.

Facebook will reset its block for messages in Australia
In the coming days, Facebook will restore messages for Australians.
Just days after Facebook stopped Australian publishers and residents from sharing news content, Facebook reversed policies. Initially, Facebook claimed, "We will now prioritize investments in other countries to invest in new licensing news programs and experiences."
According to, Australian politicians confirmed additional changes to the News Bargaining Code to "give digital platforms and news media companies more clarity about how the code works". According to the New York Times, the changes include a two-month grace period that gives the sites time to work out media deals that may mean Facebook doesn't have to operate under the Code.

The foldable Huawei Mate X2 looks like a much better Galaxy Fold
The new phone costs almost $ 2,800 and could be exclusive to China.
Huawei has unveiled its third generation foldable phone, the Mate X2, which looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Huawei has moved the foldable screen inwards with a relatively large 6.45-inch single OLED screen on the front. The new phone's Leica quad camera array includes a 50-megapixel wide-angle main camera (at least on paper versus the 40-megapixel lens on the Xs) and a range of tele options.
It's all desirable hardware, yes, but still no Google Apps or Play Store. According to Huawei, the phone runs on its EMUI 11 software, which is based on Android 10, adding that the new foldable device will be among the first to be updated to its internal HarmonyOS, which is expected to be released in April.
This may not be the only barrier to buying. In China, where it goes on sale on Feb.25, the 256GB model costs 17,999 yuan (about $ 2,785), making Samsung foldable phones look almost cheap by comparison. There's no word yet about a western start.

ThinkPad X1 Nano Review: Light and powerful, but not long-lasting
Lenovo's lightest ThinkPad to date has one major drawback.
For a laptop this light weight, the X1 Nano is impressively powerful, says Reviews Editor Cherlynn Low. Lenovo has sacrificed surprisingly little to make the lightest ThinkPad yet, and even managed to improve the display and speakers. Sure, battery life is a big tradeoff, but if you're looking for something to toss in your book bag that won't make it heavy, and that won't last all day, the ThinkPad X1 Nano is worth considering. Just know that at $ 1,399 there are quite a few competitors.

Samsung ended 2020 at the top but had a tough time for most of the year.
iPhone 12
Apple shipped more phones than any other manufacturer in the final quarter of 2020. Gartner estimates that the company shipped around 80 million iPhones in the previous quarter. That feat, one of Apple's best to date, overtook Samsung for the first time since 2016 - the era of the iPhone 7.
