The Roku Channel Lands on Amazon’s Fire TV

Amazon and Roku haven't reached a deal on HBO Max yet - and Peacock still isn't on Fire TV.
But the two over-the-top platform companies have now signed a deal to bring the Roku Channel, the free, ad-supported service with more than 100,000 titles and over 115 live / linear channels, to Fire TV devices starting Thursday to bring in the US.
One caveat: you can't subscribe to premium channels available on the Roku channel (like Showtime, Starz, Epix, or HBO - the old HBO, not HBO Max) directly on Fire TV. To do this, you need to log in directly through Roku. If you already have a Roku account and are paying for premium content, you can sign in to Fire TV and stream those channels.
However, you don't need a Roku account to watch the free content on Fire TV's Roku Channel. You can just start streaming.
Roku offers apps for Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Music on its own devices.
"We're excited to have the Roku Channel now available to all of the millions of Amazon Fire TV customers in the United States," said Sandeep Gupta, VP of Amazon Fire TV. "We have always strived to have a wide variety of content on Fire TV and we believe this is a great addition that all of our customers will enjoy."
The Roku Channel will be available in the United States starting today for Amazon Fire TV Streaming Devices, Fire TV Edition Smart TVs, and Fire TV Edition Soundbars.
To get more viewers on its Roku channel on non-Roku platforms, the company plans to launch a free mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones later this year.
Roku generates most of its revenue - and virtually all of its profits - from ad sales and subscriptions. In the second quarter of the 2020 quarter, the company's platform segment accounted for 69% of total revenue and 94% of gross profit. As of the end of the second quarter, Roku reached 43 million active accounts in the US.
In Fire TV, the Roku Channel is built into Amazon's Alexa Voice Assistant so you can say "Alexa, find the Roku Channel App" in an Alexa voice remote, paired Echo device, or Fire TV cube, to download it. Users can also find the Roku Channel by clicking the search icon in the top navigation bar of the Fire TV menu.
