The Simplest Way to Lose Weight, According to Science

Many aspects of adopting healthier habits are difficult. Cravings, fatigue, motivation, and more can affect seeing results. However, a new study says it's easiest to just talk about it to encourage progress!
The 87 participants in a study by Drexel University published in Obesity magazine in October were given the task of wearing a Fitbit tracker, weighing themselves, and recording their food intake in an app over a period of 12 months. The aim was to see if the contact and information shared with other people had any effect on their health. (See Also: 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work.)
At the beginning, they took part in a weekly group session for three months, in which they learned behavioral skills. After that, all participants had only one text per week and one call per month in contact with their coach. The trainers could see the data from half of them and use the information to create messages. No one else had access to their data, and messages were generic.
"We were interested to see if weight loss maintenance would be better if the trainers could see the data and provide feedback and accountability to the participants," says the study's lead author and associate professor at the school, Meghan Butryn. PhD., "Which Could Help Maintain High Levels of Motivation to Maintain Healthy Eating Patterns and Physical Activity."
The study found that participants whose data was shared with coaches maintained their weight loss, while those whose data was private regained about four pounds during the weeks without group sessions.
Of course, more research needs to be done, says Butryn. But showing goals and progress, and speaking about them with your doctor, trainer, dietitian, or even friends and family, could be the motivation to keep this up, especially through 2021!
