‘The Simpsons’ Creator Matt Groening Says He “Didn’t Have A Problem” With White Actors Voicing Non-White Characters
The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has spoken about the Fox show's decision in 2020 to prevent white actors from voicing characters from other ethnic groups.
Days after Simpsons veterinarian Harry Shearer was confirmed to star in the role of Dr. Julius Hibbert had been replaced, Gröning told the BBC: “Times are changing, but I actually had no problem with the way we worked. All of our actors each play dozens of characters. It was never designed to exclude anyone. "

The tone is similar to the Simpsons in 2017, when questions were asked about Hank Azaria while playing Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. A few months later, in an episode Lisa broke the fourth wall, explaining, “Something that started decades ago and was applauded and harmless is now politically incorrect. What can you do?"

When asked if he regretted the way it was handled, Groening said: "At a certain point it doesn't matter what you say. You are attacked by whoever, you know? We don't bother Consoling bigots. If you make any gesture and people perceive a weakness, you will be criticized. "
The cartoonist, who is currently working on the Netflix series Disenchantment, added that he is glad things are changing. "We're trying to do better," he said. "Bigotry and racism are still an incredible problem and it is good to finally strive for more equality and representation."
