When trying to lose weight, it's important to pay attention to everything you put into your body — including the beverages you drink. While we keep hearing about the value of a healthy breakfast, we can't forget that what you drink in the morning also plays a big part in it. And, it turns out, many people start their day off on the wrong foot with a fattening drink that can be detrimental to weight loss: sugary coffee.
To learn more about why you should skip the sugary ingredients in your morning coffee when you're trying to shed a few pounds, we spoke to registered nutritionists Trista Best of Balance One Supplements and Johna Burdeos. Read on for all of her expert insights!
Sugary coffee
Many of us rely on a daily cup of coffee to get us going in the morning and give us the energy to face the day. And if, like many people, you're a big fan of the sweet things in life, you can load this coffee up with sugar, flavored syrups, sweet milk jugs, and more. You might even have a favorite Starbucks order that really pleases your sweet tooth. Unfortunately, Best warns that "one of the worst drinking habits for those who want a leaner physique is consuming specialty coffees that are high in sugar and fat."

Of course, coffee alone is not the problem; It's everything you put into it that can tax your body. According to Best, "coffee can lead to weight gain, largely due to the ingredients you use to sweeten it." While a little treat every now and then isn't a big deal, if you eat the same high-sugar drink every day, it will really add up over time Order a drink in the cafe. As Best says, "By adding high-calorie and high-fat sweeteners or cream, you increase the likelihood that your regular coffee beverage will cause weight gain."

Burdeos agrees, stating that "a dietary pattern high in added sugars is linked to a myriad of health issues, including inflammation and weight gain, which can lead to downstream chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke." Oops!

And when you consider how much sugar is in your favorite coffee drink, you might want to think twice before ordering it that often. Burdeos lays it all out for us: “For reference, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 36g of sugar (9 teaspoons) per day for men and 24g of sugar (6 teaspoons) per day for women. A medium to large coffee with added sugar can have as much as 15 to 20 grams of sugar,” she says. On reflection, maybe black coffee isn't so bad after all.

In fact, Best says that "black coffee is best for weight loss" and points out that "caffeine can enhance weight loss efforts in some cases." That's good news for anyone who can handle the bitterness! But if you really can't stand drinking your coffee black, Burdeos offers advice: "I recommend making your own coffee at home, where you have full control over the ingredients you add." that it's always best to use natural sweeteners - it will definitely pay off in the end.
