This Mom Has a Pointed Response When People Comment on Her Postpartum Body & Reddit is Applauding

A new mom wants feedback from Reddit's AITA forum on her reaction to baby weight comments - and the users have spoken. She began by explaining that she recently gave birth to her third child. It was a very difficult pregnancy. She suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, which meant she could not keep liquids down. She vomited three to seven times a day, became hypoglycemic, and took three different medications for nausea. Later, in the comments section, she explained that the enamel on her teeth was practically gone.
Fast forward to today. A week after giving birth, she regained her original weight. "People who have been close to me throughout my pregnancy (family, coworkers, some friends, etc.) have made similar comments about how 'happy' I am that I'm getting back on my feet so quickly, how 'grateful' I am I need to be that I don't have to 'work' the baby weight you wish you were as 'blessed' as I am," she wrote.

This is frustrating for the mother because these people saw how much she suffered during pregnancy. She started returning pointed comments like, "Yes, I could have eaten better for the past ten months" or "I wouldn't call involuntary starvation a blessing" or "I'm more grateful that I can actually consume things now." ” She receives shared feedback on how she responds to those compliments.
"My mom thinks I'm justified and that other people's comments are insensitive," the Reddit user wrote. "My grandma and some friends of mine think they're unnecessary and that my co-workers just compliment me and I'm a TA for making them feel bad."

So she turned to the forum. Is she here TA?
Commenters reiterated that their friends/family/colleagues should not comment on her body. Many felt her answer was justified. "NTA," wrote one person. "When will people realize it's never appropriate to comment on other people's bodies? You have absolutely every right to react like that.”
Others spoke from personal experience. "I also had HG with my first and lost 30 pounds during pregnancy," one mom commented. "It was miserable, it was bullsh-t, it was scary and I couldn't enjoy anything about being pregnant. After the birth, everyone kept saying similar things. They invalidate your fights, and reminding them doesn't make you an AH.”

One user explained that they used similar targeted comments to get people to reevaluate their unsolicited feedback. "I've been overweight my whole life and people feel entitled to comment on my body," the person noted. "It's none of your business and I won't allow it. I was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and have had chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. The number of people who have congratulated me on my treatment-related weight loss (aka malnutrition) is amazing. People really can't help themselves for some reason and I always push it back. Recently someone told me she wished she could lose weight like I did, so I told her I hope she gets cancer so she can do it."
This Reddit post is such an important reminder that it's never appropriate to comment on a person's postpartum body. It can be hurtful, insensitive, and ignore the person's lived experience.
