Thousands call for change to one of Queen's highest honours amid claims it is 'racist'

A petition calls for one of the Queen's highest awards to be redesigned, as activists say she resembles a white man who kills a black man.
Thousands of people signed a petition that started last week and found a similarity between the medal for the Order of St. Michael and St. George and the way George Floyd died in Minneapolis.
The badge of the order shows that St. George is fighting the dragon on one side and the archangel St. Michael is trampling Satan on the other side.
In the petition, Tracy Reeve wrote: “The image on the star of the Honorary Knights / Dames Commander (KCMG / DCMG) is an angel with white skin who stood on the head / neck of a black-skinned devil.
“This is an extremely offensive picture that also commemorates the recent murder of George Floyd by the white cop, as shown here in this medal.
"We, the undersigned, demand that this medal be completely redesigned in an appropriate manner and that an official apology be given for the crime that has been committed!"

Many of the signatories have agreed that the medal needs to be "updated" or "modernized".
The Order of St. Michael and St. George was founded in 1818 by the then Prince Regent, who became George IV when the Ionian Islands were placed under British protection.
The order recognized the respected citizens of the islands and then Malta and now honors service in British territories and foreign affairs.
Sir Simon Woolley, the director and one of the founders of Operation Black Vote, told The Guardian: “The original image may have been from St. Michael who killed Satan, but the figure has no horns or tail and is clearly a black man. It is a shocking account, and it is even more shocking that this image could be presented to ambassadors who represent this country abroad.
“For most black and brown people, the empire is not a good thing. Most people will see this as a picture of George Floyd on a global scale and as a symbol of white supremacy. "

The queen is in order and the Duke of Kent is the grand master. Other members of the order include actress Angelina Jolie, astronaut Tim Peake, moderator and actor Michael Palin, and several former governors-general of the Commonwealth countries.
There are 125 Knights and Dames Grand Cross, 375 Knights and Dames Commander and 1750 Companions.
