Three Gators cut from team by Napier, fourth on thin ice

Eventually, this moment had to come for Billy Napier and the Florida Gators. On Wednesday, the first-year head coach told three players they were no longer with the team, according to 247Sports. Safety Mordecai McDaniel, defenseman Chris Thomas and receiver Fenley Graham, who switched to the position in the offseason after playing in the secondary for the past two seasons, are expected to enter the transfer portal.
Receiver Marcus Burke was also initially removed from the updated squad and the sporting information director told several reporters he was also cut, but that turned out to be a misunderstanding after team leaders went to Napier in hopes of reversing the decision . Napier signed, but the three remaining cuts still came as a bit of a shock to both the team and the fan base.
Graham was a fan favorite. One of the many former Lakeland Dreadnaughts to come to Florida, his willingness to switch positions earned him praise from wide receivers coach Keary Colbert in the spring and was believed to be a kick returner in the fall conversation would be . But those cuts reportedly had little to do with talent and where they were on the depth map, and more to do with who was buying into the new culture.
McDaniel is another name many expected to contribute in some way this season after playing in all 13 games and 10 as a freshman last year. Thomas was a three-star recruit who saw action in just a single game as a freshman, so his cut is less surprising, but he still sends a message to the team. At the same time, this has given Napier enough time after the spring to earn the respect of his players.
First-year coaches can make these cuts from scholarship players thanks to an NCAA charter, but they can still remain at the school until they graduate on scholarship. However, most players test the portal and find new opportunities. The only problem is that the deadline was May 1st, so these players will need a dispensation to get admitted to another school next season.
Florida has shrunk to 87 grantees after the move. That means there is a chance that two or more players have been eliminated.
