In June, Dr. Raj points out three mistakes people make every morning - and one in particular attracts a lot of attention.
"Drinking coffee as soon as you wake up [is a mistake]," says Dr. Raj. “The maximum level of cortisol is produced between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning, which naturally wakes you up. If you drink coffee between these times, you will not get the most out of the stimulant effects of the caffeine. Instead, pick it up when your cortisol drops. "
Cortisol is the body's main stress hormone and works with the brain to control things like mood and motivation. Usually, cortisol levels rise in the early hours of the morning and then fall very low in the evening. If you sleep during the day and stay awake all night, the pattern is reversed. Then your cortisol levels will go up in the evening and go down in the morning.
Basically, Dr. Raj, that you are naturally most vigilant in the morning - you don't have to have coffee until around noon when your cortisol levels start to drop.
Commentators on Dr. Raj's video seemed upset at the idea of changing a popular way of life.
"But people around me aren't safe until I've had my morning coffee," joked one person.
“But coffee is so nice,” complained another.
"The first two [dots] I'm on board with, but BACK OF MY COFFEE," someone wrote.
