Tim McGraw Admits He Can't Play This Song For Faith Hill Without Crying
Tim McGraw's new album Here on Earth is full of sweet and soulful country songs to get lost in, but it has garnered more resonance from both fans and singer than most. McGraw shared an additional backstory on the emotional track "I Called Mama," a song that was hit hard in its May release amid the coronavirus pandemic for its message of grief and the fact that life is not a given. It turns out that McGraw was so excited with the song when he first heard the demo that he wanted to learn it right away and play for Ms. Faith Hill - but he couldn't get through the chorus without breaking into tears. And we thought we were the only ones!
McGraw shared the vulnerable backstory on Instagram as the sixth day of his #McGrawSongChallenge, the category of which was "A Song That Makes You Cry".
"When I first heard it, I wanted to play it for Faith," he says. "And I didn't want her to hear the demo, it was just an acoustic guitar demo, I wanted to learn the first verse and chorus so I could play it for her. And I'll be damned if I don't for her she would play and I couldn't - I could never get through it, I would just fall apart when I got to the "I called mom". "
McGraw also seems to choke on the line in the video and laughs at himself: "I'll do it now! The line" I called mom "does it to me every time I hear it."
"I Called Mama" is definitely an emotionally heavy song, and one thing McGraw says means more to him now than ever before.
"As you progress in life and things happen, you lose friends and you get older, it really hits you," he mused. "Thinking about life and thinking about where you are in life, what's important to you, what's not important to you. And ultimately, your mother is the first person you want to reach out and the person you are with Feeling the safest of all, for me and for most of the people I think. Especially boys and their moms. "
We suspect McGraw's own mother - who was featured in her son's music video - has blown her line since the song came out.
