Toddler left home alone while parents go to New York, South Carolina cops say

A two-year-old boy was found alone at home in South Carolina while his parents were in New York, police said. Both parents were arrested.
Charleston police officers said they found the toddler alone at his father's home around 2 p.m. On Thursday, November 17, WCIV reported. The boy's parents, both 24, were arrested on Monday and remain in custody. Both were charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.
The toddler was originally found by a manager at the apartment complex during an "emergency call" after they were unable to reach the boy's father, who lives in the apartment, police said, according to the WCBD. During the walkthrough, the child was found alone in the apartment, sleeping on a bed in the unit's living room.

When police entered the unit, the boy woke up and reached for his empty water bottle, according to a police report, according to WYFF. The toddler had a soiled diaper but otherwise appeared to be in good health. He was taken to Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital by nurses.
A witness told police that the boy's father sent a text message saying he was in New York, the report said. After several attempts to contact the toddler's parents, his father called the apartment complex and spoke to the police.
The 24-year-old told police he was only "a few states away" and left the child around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the WCBD. He eventually admitted he was in New York "on business" and assumed the boy's mother was watching him, police told news outlets.
The boy's father switched his story to police again, saying the child's mother was also in New York "due to an emergency," the report said.
