Two Tom Hanks vehicles will be auctioned during Monterey Car Week in Bonhams in August. The big win is a 1992 Airstream Model 34 Limited Excella travel trailer that Hanks used while making films for decades. The secondary (but also exciting) offer is a 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser that Hanks had built specifically for his use.
Starting with the trailer, Hanks had it built according to his specifications in 1993 and equipped for his use. He owned it and used it in films until 2017. His reason for selling the trailer was not listed in Bonhams' notes, but there is no doubt that the trailer is showing its age at this point.
"I got it in the days when movies were slower," Hanks told Bonhams. "I had spent too much time in regular caravans with ugly decor and terribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand new Airstream shell with an interior at my own request."
The inside of this 35-foot trailer is a bit reserved for someone in Hanks' financial position. It's' 90s luxury, so it's not brimming with high-tech gizmos and has it all connected. Instead, it's a step back to a point in history that wasn't long ago. The new owner will be able to admire Hanks' autograph on one of the air conditioners to make sure you never forget who it belonged to before. You can also see “flap” stickers on the windows that show you the 18 different places Hanks used the trailer.
Bonhams predicts this Airstream will sell for $ 150,000 to $ 250,000.

Next up is Hanks’s 1980 FJ40 Land Cruiser. Hanks had a number of things done to this FJ to make it “competent both in the wild and on the highway”. The first is an engine swap for the 4.3-liter Vortec V6 from GM, which makes 180 hp. This is then paired with a GM five-speed manual transmission and connected to Toyota's drivetrain.
The suspension is upgraded with Old Man Emu shock absorbers and steering dampers. It's also on 31-inch Toyo Open Country tires. Hanks had the interior modified with a set of electrically adjustable Porsche seats (the original seats are included in the sale) and a new stereo system with speakers in the rear - it also has air conditioning.
As with the Airstream, the Hanks ‘signature can be found in the interior. Bonhams is forecasting a retail price of $ 75,000 to $ 125,000 for this particular FJ40. Neither the Land Cruiser nor the Airstream have a reserve, so they'll definitely find a new home at this auction.
