Toyota makes THUMS Virtual Human Body Model software free for everyone

For security reasons, Toyota Motor Corporation has decided to be generous and make one of its innovations public.
Only two days ago, the auto giant announced its plans to make the software THUMS (Total Human Model for Safety) free of charge for the public. THUMS 'license (for sale), originally licensed by JSOL Corporation (Tokyo) and ESI Group (Paris), ends this year and will be freely available from January 2021.
If you don't know what THUMS is, it was originally created in collaboration with Toyota Centeral R&D Labs Inc. in 2000. It is a virtual software program for human body models that performs a detailed analysis of injuries to the human body during a vehicle collision.
It is considered to be the world's first virtual model software for the human body and is a valuable tool for safety technology researchers when it comes to learning and improving safety in vehicles.

THUMs differ from a crash test dummy in that they can precisely analyze collision-related injuries because they use precise organ shapes, material textures and durability of human models.

Over the years, Toyota has developed models that not only contained detailed human anatomy (such as skeletal structures, brains, internal organs, etc.), but also different genders, ages, body shapes, and even postures.
Currently, the most current version on the market has been updated to the latest version 6 last year.
THUMS is used by over 100 vehicle research institutions, suppliers, manufacturers and universities for vehicle safety research. Research and development centers in Japan and other countries use it to research and create safety features (such as vehicle structure, airbags, and seat belts) for vehicles.

Seigo Kuzumaki, Fellow at Advanced R & D and Engineering Company, made the following comment on free access to THUMS:
“Since the very first start of THUMS in 2000, we have continuously improved and worked diligently to better reproduce the human anatomy and to expand the variations of the models. It has now become an indispensable technology for Toyota's efforts in the development of safety technologies and vehicles. "
"We have decided to make the software freely available so that more people can use it, further improve vehicle safety across the automotive industry, and reduce traffic accidents and deaths to create a safer society. We look forward to it is generally applied. " Development sites and others who imagine a mobility society with automated vehicles and other technologies that is evolving. "
