Trump endorses Paxton over Bush in Texas attorney general race

President Donald Trump on Monday backed acting Texas attorney general Ken Paxton, a Republican challenged in a primary by George P. Bush, son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
"Ken has my full and unreserved approval for another term as Attorney General of Texas. He's a true Texan who will protect Texas - and will never let you down! ”Trump said in a statement.
The approval could be a boon for Paxton as Trump continues to enjoy support in the Republican Party. Bush, whose family is rooted in the state and in the Republican Party, had sought Trump's support. Bush's entry into the race will make it one of the most anticipated and analyzed state-level races of the cycle.
Paxton is one of the country's pro-Trump state officials. He filed a lawsuit that the Supreme Court denied to contest Trump's 2020 loss.
Bush seems to be betting that Paxton's growing legal problems could have political ramifications for voters. Paxton is on trial on securities fraud and allegations of abuse of office, charges that prompted Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, to ask him to resign.
Bush has tried to win Trump's support despite past public disputes with his family, and Trump has responded warmly. Bush tweeted about his support for Trump and his campaign was handing out can coolers (koozies), quoting Trump as saying, “This is the only Bush who likes me. This is the Bush who got it right. I like him."
However, during the 2016 campaign, Trump tweeted an attack on Bush's mother. Former President George W. Bush also criticized Trump after the January 6 attack, and Trump in turn attacked Bush.
