Trump Says Getting The Coronavirus Was A ‘Blessing From God’
President Donald Trump called it a "blessing from God" that he got the coronavirus, a disease that has killed over 211,000 Americans this year.
"I think it was a blessing from God that I caught him," said the president on Wednesday in a video message in front of the White House about COVID-19.
Trump tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday and spent three days in Walter Reed's hospital before returning to the White House on Monday.
The US leads the world with over 7.5 million confirmed coronavirus cases and over 211,000 deaths.
The president also said he feels "great - I feel perfect" and extolled his recovery: "I came in for me, I didn't feel good, a short 24 hours later I felt great."
Trump received world-class medical care, including experimental treatment, for free - something that is out of reach for most Americans.
Trump has received various forms of treatment, including a monoclonal antibody cocktail from the pharmaceutical company Regeneron. He hailed this treatment as "the key" - even though Trump said on the video, "They gave me Regeneron" and apparently believed that this was the name of the drug, as opposed to the company that makes it.
"For me it wasn't therapeutic, it just made me better, OK, I call this a cure," he said. There is currently no cure for coronavirus.
The president has repeatedly downplayed the threat from the coronavirus since it spread across the US this spring. Since he got the coronavirus himself, he tweeted on Monday: "Don't be afraid of Covid."
Coronavirus is highly contagious, and Trump and over two dozen others who surround him have tested positive for the virus in the past few days after violating public health guidelines by not wearing masks or socially distancing themselves. Those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak at the White House include press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and at least three staff members, three Republican senators and Trump adviser Stephen Miller. Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie remains in the hospital four days after announcing he tested positive.
Trump is pushing the debate with Democratic candidate Joe Biden for the next week, although he doesn't know if he'll be contagious by then.
