Trump suggests new stimulus package will include 'very generous' checks for most Americans
Donald Trump has committed to support a "very generous" coronavirus support package in a new interview, while apparently suggesting that upcoming legislation includes another check to be sent to the majority of Americans.
When asked whether the Republican Senate bill provides for direct payments, similar to the $ 1,200 checks contained in the Coronavirus Aid, Aid, and Economic Security Act (CARES), the president said, "Yes, this is us."
He was then pushed into more detail by Scripps' Washington correspondent Joe St George, who asked, "When? When will you get it "
Mr. Trump replied, "We had a better result than ever before. We had the best job numbers, the best economy, the best economy we've ever had, and then the virus came from China. Now we're rebuilding it. We're going to carry out another stimulus package. It will be very good, it will be very generous. "
Earlier this week, the president had not publicly supported a second wave of direct payments - one of the most costly aspects of the extensive $ 2 billion CARES law - to be included in new corona virus support packages. Although he apparently confirmed that a second form of payment would come, he declined to provide additional details and only discussed the invoice and not the payments themselves.
The reporter went on to ask Mr. Trump "how much" the payments would be, adding, "People want to know."
Mr Trump said the bill was likely to be "bipartisan" and announced "likely in the next few weeks."
While the president appeared to support another round of direct payments, White House officials were more reluctant to support a second wave of checks.
An official told NBC News that the checks were "part of something the business team is investigating," and said, "No decisions have yet been made."
Mr. Trump and his allies have refused to support the HEROES Law, a democratically passed law passed in the home that includes $ 1,200 checks to most Americans, including equal payments for child addicts. Republicans on Capitol Hill have said the next coronavirus relief package will be in the Senate, not the House of Representatives.
In a statement, White House spokesman Judd Deere said, "Any fourth phase economic package must prioritize growth-enhancing economic measures that encourage employers and our large American workforce to return to the labor market."
