Your abs will always be better when you are working with a load, just as it is when you are training other muscle groups. If you are able to get your hands on a kettlebell for your home gym, this is one of the most versatile tools you can use to build your body.
But having kettlebells is only half the battle. You also need to know how to use them - especially if you are used to bodyweight training that includes exercises like crunches and planks. Trainer Charlee Atkins, C.S.C.S. Have you dealt with a four-exercise kettlebell routine that blows your abs and helps build strength in your core? Just make sure you are in proper shape to avoid injury and start with a lighter weight first - especially if you've only been training with body weight.
All you need is a kettlebell and some space to spread out on the floor. You may also want to use a mat to protect your back. Watch Atkins demonstrate the four moves, then pick up the workout yourself.
Do each exercise for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds:
Figure 8
Sit up and press
Arch bridge
Leg lower
Repeat the series for a full core punching session for a total of 4 rounds. Make sure your spine is in a strong and secure position throughout. So if you make the first effort and round your back, switch to a lighter kettlebell or let the weight drop completely.
