Tua gets off the bench, but only for Dolphins celebration
MIAMI (AP) - Ryan Fitzpatrick not only threw 350 yards to help the Dolphins beat the 49ers, but he also made a good catch when teammate Tua Tagovailoa jumped into his arms for a touchdown.
For at least another week, this may be the only way Tagovailoa gets on the field.
Fitzpatrick quelled Miami's quarterback controversy with one of the best performances of his career in San Francisco and made sure he'll be back on Sunday against the New York Jets.
"He's the greatest team-mate I've ever played with," said Mike Gesicki on Monday. “He's always having fun; The energy and confidence he brings is contagious and he makes the guys around him better. If I could play with him for the next 15 years, I would. He's the man. "
If the Dolphins (2-3) win again on Sunday and Fitzpatrick plays well, it's hard to imagine coach Brian Flores switching QBs the following bye week. Otherwise, this would have been a logical time to promote Tagovailoa, Miami's top draft pick and potential franchise quarterback.
Flores said he hadn't considered bringing Tagovailoa into the game in the 43-17 win late on Sunday to make his NFL debut.
"If I want to let him drop the ball, it might make some people happy," said Flores. "I don't see any real reason in that. Look, he's the backup. He'll be ready to go when his number is called."
Flores was in attack mode against defending NFC champion San Francisco from the start, and his aggressiveness paid off.
Fitzpatrick hit Preston Williams in the Dolphins' first game for 47 yards. Later a long litter came to Gesicki for 70 meters. And when Fitzpatrick scored DeVante Parker for a 22-yard score, it was the NFL's longest touchdown in third place since 2001.
"In evaluating the few games before, we haven't fired enough shots and given our boys a chance," said Fitzpatrick. "We have some pretty big goals out there and people who can really run."
In defense, the dolphins flashed more and the result was five sacks, the highest total in Flores' two years as a coach. Five players had one sack each.
"We just did a great job understanding the defense so we could put different players in different places," said linebacker Jerome Baker. "Sometimes the coaches don't even tell us we'll just do it."
In special teams, the Dolphins pulled a wrong boat that put an end to all hopes of the 49ers for a comeback.
WHAT NEEDS HELP?
Fitzpatrick's inconsistency is a hallmark of his career, and he followed perhaps his worst performance of the year in Week 4 with his best: his passerby rating against the 49ers was a near-perfect 154.5.
He's just as confused as anyone by his wild swings from FitzMagic to FitzTragic.
"Playing quarterback in this league is tough and I still can't figure it out after 16 years," he said.
Williams had four catches for 106 yards and a score, his best game since sustaining an ACL injury that sidelined him for the second half of last season.
"I'm starting to feel more comfortable out there, just getting my soccer feet back under me," he said.
Williams won a starting job as a vacant rookie last year.
Running back on Jordan Howard, who signed a $ 9.75 million two-year deal with Miami in March, was healthy inactivity. He has 14 yards in 18 stretches this year.
After rookie Austin Jackson (ankle) sidelined for at least three games, veteran Jesse Davis switched off the right tackle to replace him, and Robert Hunt of the second round started his first career with the right tackle.
The Dolphins have started three rookie draft picks on the offensive line, a first in a season for the franchise.
"There's a lot of energy from this group," said Flores.
Jackson, a first-round pick, is expected to miss at least two more weeks of training.
118 - The Dolphins' overall season for first downs, ranking fifth in the NFL. The last time they got higher than the 19th was in 2014.
The NFL schedule, which has been revised due to coronavirus outbreaks, calls for Miami to host the Jets (0-5) instead of playing Denver on Sunday.
