Tufts Lacrosse Player Madie Nicpon Dies After Choking In Charity Hot Dog-Eating Contest

A Tufts University lacrosse player reportedly choked to death in a charity hot dog eating contest over the weekend.
Madie Nicpon, a 20-year-old junior who was described by friends as a generous teammate planning a career in medicine, competed with fellow students in the Play for Pink fundraiser at an off-campus house in Somerville, Massachusetts , Saturday when the accident happened, a friend told NewsCenter 5.
First responders carried out "comprehensive life-saving measures," Tufts said in a statement. Nicpon was pronounced dead a day later at Massachusetts General Hospital.
School administration's emails confirmed her death, the school newspaper Tufts Daily reported. Around 3,000 gathered at a memorial at the Gantcher Center on Sunday and the mourners made their way to the lacrosse field, where candles were placed around Nicpons lacrosse jerseys, the school newspaper noted.

"We are heartbroken over the loss of Madie Nicpon'23 - a member of @tufts_lacrosse and an incredible person who has reached every corner of the Tufts University community," the team said in a statement on Instagram. "Madie will be remembered as a bright light, social butterfly, amazing teammate, kind and generous person, wonderful sister and daughter, and a jumbo that we can all emulate."
Nicpon, a biopsychology major from Suffern, New York, played three games in the 2021 season and made one appearance in the 2020 season shortened by the pandemic. She played lacrosse and ran track at Suffern High School and was an Academic All-American according to her lacrosse bio by Tufts.
She leaves behind her parents and two brothers.
