Twitter Is Cringing at the ‘I Take Responsibility’ Campaign Featuring White Celebs Calling Out Racism

UPDATE: June 12, 2020 - The & aposI Take Responsibility & apos campaign has been questioned on Twitter, but a response may have made it worth it. On Friday, Dear White People, the Netflix series, which followed a group of black students at a mostly white university, released its own video called #DearUsPeople.
"The white students at Winchester also want to take responsibility," tweeted the series report. "We tried to stop them. #DearUsPeople"
This is an absolute parody of yesterday's celebrity PSA, especially if you're familiar with the show. The white characters of the series & apos Muffy (Caitlin Carver), Kurt (Wyatt Nash), Clifton (Erich Lane), Abigail (Sheridan Pierce) and Gabe (John Patrick Amedori) all share the problematic or racist moments for which they are dedicated to be held accountable.

"I take responsibility for not posting the black square early enough, but leaving it open for far too long," says popular student Muffy at one point in the video, while other students apologize for being unsure of theirs speak to black friends ... and referred to them as their "black friends".
However, the most current moment comes from the well-meaning friend of series manager Samantha White (Logan Browning). "I take responsibility for creating a documentary that focuses on a race discussion," he says at the end before thinking about what he's recording. "Shit, I'll do it again."

ORIGINAL STORY: June 11, 2020 - A new campaign in partnership with NAACP and several white celebrities called "I Take Responsibility" started today, June 11.
"I take responsibility," asks white people to call racism when they see it and to commit to supporting the lives of black people. The campaign includes a PSA with Kristen Bell, Kesha, Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sarah Paulson, Stanley Tucci and a number of other celebrities on the A-list - and according to a press release, the stars involved have committed to “supporting organizations up for the rights of oppressed communities. "
Check out the PSA below:
Although the PSA has good intentions, it is not very well received on Twitter. The video is in black and white and shows the celebrities mentioned above, who stare dramatically at the camera and say correct but vague things like: “We are no longer viewers. We will not be idle. Enough is enough ”and“ I will not allow any more unchecked moments. I will no longer allow racist, hurtful words, jokes, stereotypes - no matter how big or small - to be spoken in my presence. "
People quickly compared #ITakeResponsibility to the “Imagine” debacle earlier this year, in which celebrities covered the popular John Lennon song to lift people's spirits at the start of the coronavirus outbreak. If you have banned this from your memory, here is a reminder:
"Regret that the celebrities are back," someone tweeted about the PSA #ITakeResponsibility. Many of the answers reflect this feeling. "What are they playing for," wrote one person, to which someone replied: "End racism: the musical."

#ITakeResponsibility is just another way for whites to pander and signal virtue. But I find the outward rumbling amusing.

Of course, these celebrities did no harm to this PSA - which some pointed out in defense - but it might have been more effective if they had spoken less monologously. Nevertheless, the core of the campaign is true: white people have to inform themselves about systemic racism and take responsibility for their part in it.
