UAE moves its weekend to Saturday-Sunday
The United Arab Emirates postpone their weekend.
The people there now have Saturday and Sunday off instead of Friday and Saturday.
The change will take effect from the beginning of next year.
All of this is part of the Gulf State's efforts to better align its economy with global markets.
Other moves last year included measures to liberalize alcohol laws and pre-marriage cohabitation.
The working week in the United Arab Emirates now only lasts four and a half days and lasts from Monday morning to Friday 12 noon before the Muslim prayers.
The government hopes the change will help smooth international financial transactions and boost tourism.
An economist at Abu Dhabi Bank said she expected many private sector companies to move into the new weekend.
Friday is a day off in many Muslim-majority countries.
However, UAE officials note that Indonesia, Morocco and others already have Saturday through Sunday weekends.
