Before the war, the number of active duty military personnel was officially limited to 250,000 soldiers.

Zelenskyy noted that the Ukrainian army needed more than the 250,000 servicemen in its pre-war armed forces to withstand the full-scale Russian invasion, including the 120,000 who had combat experience. More soldiers were needed.

"From the point of view of the amount of armed forces deployed by the Russian Federation, which deployed everything - reserves, "silent" mobilization, etc. ... they moved a lot of troops ... a really big amount," the president said during his appearance on the Ukraine 24 TV channel .
He added that the Russian Federation's troop levels would pose a challenge to any European country.

"But even if we added 100,000 soldiers - we could not stop Russia," Zelenskyy said.
“Now we have 700,000. So what you see is the result of the work of 700,000 people fighting for and defending our territory.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, when the city of Vasylkiv, Boryspil near Kyiv and Dnipro Airport in Dnipro became the first victims of Russian missile attacks.
May 21 is the 87th day of a full-fledged war. The Russian invaders attempted to conduct offensive operations from the north, east, and south, using massed artillery and aircraft to shell peaceful cities across Ukraine.

Since the first days and weeks of the war, the most complicated military situation has prevailed in Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Mariupol. For more than a month, the Russian army shelled Kyiv and its outskirts. Several suburbs of Kyiv were almost completely destroyed - Bucha, Irpin, Makariv, Borodyanka.

Residents of Borshchahivka and Holosiiv districts of Kyiv reported that fighting broke out in the outskirts of the city in March. Kiev's territorial defense forces managed to push back the invaders.
Currently, the Russian invaders are attempting to gain control of the unoccupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
The Russian army controls some areas in Zaporizhia, Kherson and Kharkiv oblasts. However, the Ukrainian army is conducting its own counter-offensive there.
On April 22, the Russian government officially stated that its goal for the "second phase of the war" was to gain full control of Ukraine's Donbass and the Black Sea coast in order to build a land bridge from Crimea to the Donbass.
