The Russian military does not know the surrender rules of the Ukrainian armed forces

The message said there have been more cases of mass surrenders of Russian troops recently, which "brings nothing but joy to the Armed Forces of Ukraine" as it saves Ukraine ammunition and effort while protecting Russian lives.
The Strategic Communications Center (StartCom) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine notes that some surrendering Russian soldiers are totally ignorant of the rules of war.
The message also indicated that as a prisoner of war one no longer wants or can take part in hostilities.

"Opening fire on the Ukrainian military under the guise of surrender -- in other words, faking surrender -- is a violation of Additional Protocol 1 to the Geneva Convention," StratCom said.
“This is classified as perfidy and a war crime posing a threat to the safety of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is usually followed by the elimination of (enemy combatants feigning surrender).”

StratCom further outlined the key elements of a surrender procedure: To clearly show a desire to surrender - raise your hands and clearly say "I surrender". In addition, a surrendering soldier should avoid hostile actions, hold a weapon in hand, and be careful not to make sudden movements.

"Commanders of invading Russian forces: Voluntary surrender is a chance for you and your subordinates to stay alive," the embassy adds.
