University: Utah star freshman running back Ty Jordan dead
DALLAS (AP) - Ty Jordan, a University of Utah star freshman who grew up in the Dallas area, has died, school officials said Saturday.
The Texas and Utah authorities have not released details of the circumstances surrounding the Jordan’s death. The day before, the 19-year-old was named Pac-12's Newcomer of the Year.
"Words cannot express the devastation and grief our team is feeling when they learn of the tragic death of our teammate and brother Ty Jordan," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement.
Jordan, a quick 5-foot-7, 200-pound player, emerged from a crowded Utah field and became the focus of the team's offensive. He finished the season with 597 yards of rushing, 11 catches for 126 yards and six touchdowns.
Jordan played in Mesquite, a suburb of Dallas, and was a high profile recruit. He made a seamless transition to college play, including three 100-yard rushing performances to close the season.
Utah was one of nearly two dozen major college football teams to turn down the opportunity to play a postseason bowl game. Instead, players who have been following strict COVID-19 protocols for months have been able to start their off-season.
