Morgan, 31, made five appearances for Spurs in the FA Women's Super League, scoring two goals in the process when she made her comeback after she was born in early 2020.
This has always been seen as a short-term move for Morgan, but it's shorter than many expected.
Here is Tottenham's statement in full as it will say it will play in the US again as the WSL is now on hiatus through January.
"We can confirm that Alex Morgan will return to the US in the new year after the conclusion of the first half of the Barclays FA Women's Super League season." The striker joined us in September from Orlando Pride and appeared five times in our colors. In the WSL she scored two goals after becoming active again after giving birth in May. "
What's next for Alex Morgan?
Here's what Alex Morgan had to say about her brief stint at Tottenham as she appears to be playing in the NWSL again now, likely with her former team Orlando Pride who retained her NWSL rights before joining Spurs.
"I will forever be grateful to the club, my teammates and Spurs supporters for looking after me and my family so well," said Morgan. “When I got to London, I realized that I was part of a world class organization that gave me the opportunity to get back into the game I love. Thanks to everyone who helped make this chapter of my football trip so special ... COYS. "

Heather Cowan, director of women's football, said this about Morgan's influence on Spurs.
"We were really excited about the start of the season when Alex selected us as her club to get fit and take her first steps back into football after she was born earlier this year," said Cowan. "It was a pleasure to have Alex with us during this period and the entire squad took a lot from working with someone at the top of the women's game every day." We wish Alex all the best for the future, both at the club and internationally, as she prepares to return home with her family. She will always be welcome here at Spurs. "
USWNT star will have many positive results from the Tottenham stint
Morgan's move to Tottenham always seemed like a chance to regain her shape and fitness. The USWNT forward has been sidelined since August 2019 after becoming pregnant for the first time in May 2020.
This was a short-term move that worked well for everyone, as it raised Tottenham's profile in the global women's game and gave Morgan the opportunity to work on her fitness ahead of the Tokyo Olympics next summer.
With the NWSL on a break after their summer tournament, it will now be exciting to see whether Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle, Tobin Heath and Christen Press will all return to the US and follow in Morgan's footsteps, or whether they will stay in England for a long time.
