Vanderpump Rules star Lala Kent shared her thoughts on Demi Lovato's “California Sober” approach to sobriety - and said she found it “super insulting” as someone who got sober.
The 30-year-old reality star appeared on Monday's "Behind the Velvet Rope" podcast hosted by David Yontef. Kent shared her own experience of getting sober in 2018 after struggling with addiction following her father's death.
"I was just watching the Demi Lovato documentary where [they] say [they are] 'California Sober' like [they] aren't doing hard drugs - but [they] drink and smoke weed," Yontef said. "And I'm not judging, I'm just saying, do you think something like this works? Or is it just different for everyone?"
"I don't like to be judged, but I think that's really super offensive," said Kent.
After discussing how she's met a lot of people who work hard never to "enter into an altered state," Kent said, "To me, being sober means you don't pull yourself out of reality."
Lovato, who survived a near-fatal overdose in 2018, said in an interview earlier this year that the term they can best identify with now is "California Sober". It's a term that often refers to people who give up alcohol and most drugs, but still use marijuana.
As Insider reported, Lovato revealed they mixed "meth, molly, cocaine, marijuana, and oxycontin on the very first night they relapsed in 2018". Lovato told CBS that they still drink and smoke some weed, but don't consider this approach a "one-size-fits-all" approach.
"I'm really not comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people because I don't want anyone to look at my safety parameters and think it works for them because maybe it doesn't," Lovato said in the "CBS". Sunday morning "show.
On Yontef's podcast, Kent said she thought being "California sober" was "not a real thing."
"If you drink or smoke weed, you are not sober," said Kent.
Kent published a book called "Give Them Lala" in May and became a national best-selling author. The reality star is currently shooting the ninth season of "Vanderpump Rules".
