Varun Dhawan’s ‘Coolie No. 1,’ Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Chhalaang’ Lead New Amazon India Direct-to-Service Slate
The highly anticipated cinema titles "Coolie No 1" starring Varun Dhawan and "Chhalaang" starring Rajkummar Rao are among the films in five Indian languages that are broadcast directly on Amazon Prime Video India and bypass the cinemas.
The films were due to be released over the course of the summer, but the spread of the coronavirus pandemic resulted in Indian cinemas closing in March. They will reopen on October 15th after seven months.
Beginning with the takeover of "Gulabo Sitabo" by Amazon with Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in May, several films originally slated for theatrical release were diverted to Amazon, and the competing streamers Netflix, Disney Plus Hotstar and Zee5, among others, remained closed while the cinemas stayed closed.
Amazon's new list includes three films from the Hindi-speaking Bollywood industry. David Dhawan's comedy "Coolie No 1" also plays Sara Ali Khan ("Kedarnath"), while Ashok G's thriller "Durgavati" plays Bhumi Pednekar ("Bala"). The social comedy "Chhalaang" (pictured) comes from Hansal Mehta ("Aligarh"). In addition to Rao, who won the Variety Asia Rising Star Award in 2017, Nusrat Bharucha ("Dream Girl") can also be seen in the film. "Regardless of whether the film is released in OTT or movie theaters, it's important that audiences feel inspired and entertained after watching Chhalaang," Mehta told Variety.
Dhilip Kumar's Tamil-language romantic drama "Maara" plays Madhavan and Shraddha Srinath, while Vinod Anantoju's Telugu-language bizarre story "Middle Class Melodies" plays Anand Deverakonda.
Also on the blackboard is the Malayalam-language comedy “Halal Love Story” directed by Zakariya Mohammed (“Sudani from Nigeria”) with Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, Soubin Shahir and Parvathy Thiruvothu. There are two films in the Kannada language, Karthik Saragur's family entertainer "Bheemasena Nalamaharaja" with Aravinnd Iyer and Aarohi Narayan, and Vivy Kathiresan's horror thriller "Manne Number 13" with Varsha Bollamma and Chetan Gandharva.
The films will be available on service from mid-October.
