Virginia Tech LB allegedly killed man upon discovering he was not a woman after sexual encounter

Prosecutors say Virginia Tech suspended linebacker Isimemen Etute beat a man to death after finding out the victim was not a woman he believed online.
Etute was charged on June 2 with the second degree of murder in the death of Blacksburg, Virginia, resident Jerry Smith. Etute, a member of Virginia Tech's 2021 Recruiting Class, was suspended from the team following his indictment.
At a bond hearing on Wednesday, state lawyers revealed that Etute allegedly told police he hit and kicked Smith, 40, multiple times after discovering Smith was a man. Etute had reportedly gone for a second sexual encounter at Smith's apartment to meet someone he thought was a woman.
From Roanoke.com:
According to these police statements, Etute visited the victim's home for oral sex on April 10 after being hooked up with someone named "Angie" on Tinder. Etute returned to the home for sexual activity on May 31, and found that the person he was introduced with was a man.
Etute told police that he slapped the victim in the face five times and continued to hit when the person hit the ground and "stomped" on them. When he left the apartment, he heard "bubbling and gurgling" but did not call the police.
Smith was found dead in his apartment two days later. According to the coroner, Smith died of a blunt violent trauma to the head. Prosecutors said Wednesday that Smith was missing multiple teeth, suffered multiple fractures, and every bone on his face was broken.
Etute, 18, was an early student from Virginia Beach and a two-star recruit in the 2021 class. After being charged with murder, Virginia Tech released a statement saying investigators should continue to do their best to support.
Etute was given $ 75,000 bail at Wednesday's hearing and is allowed to live with his family in Virginia Beach pending his trial. According to media reports from the hearing attendees, several Virginia Tech players were present.
