'We are not the Postal Service': White House won't guarantee packages arrive on time for Christmas amid supply-chain issues
White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Wednesday that despite the Biden government's efforts to resolve global supply chain issues, the Biden government cannot guarantee packages will arrive on time for Christmas.
Psaki opened the daily press conference Wednesday by stating that President Joe Biden had made important commitments to ensure shippers operate around the clock to reduce vacation arrears. But there is still no guarantee that packages will arrive on time.
"We're not the postal service or UPS or FedEx," said Psaki. "We can not guarantee. What we can do is use every lever available to the federal government to reduce delays. "
FIVE REASONS FOR BIDEN'S APPROVAL VALUES
"We can't promise too much here, and I won't do that because we know there are a lot of problems in the global supply chain," she continued.
Biden government officials were concerned that Christmas season bottlenecks could become the latest political headache for the president, who has suffered from many.
"The stories we are now hearing about the warning that if you want to have Christmas toys for your children, it might be time to start buying because the delay can be many, many months," warned Vice President Kamala Harris in August .
There is massive cargo backlog in Southern California. California's coronavirus precautions and labor shortages have resulted in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which account for about 40% of all U.S. imports, operate at about 60% capacity.

The government is also grappling with inflation concerns across the economy. Psaki described the price hikes as "temporary," but acknowledged that they are "a problem that affects [the public] almost every day."
