We visited two Walmart stores in New York and California on Black Friday morning and found the aisles relatively empty.
In New York, customers shopped for electronics and toys while the rest of the store was quiet.
In California, too, most customers stuck to the electronics and holiday divisions.
We visited two Walmart locations on opposite sides of the country to see what Black Friday shopping was like this year.

To our surprise, both the Walmart in Rochester, New York and Irvine, California saw similarly low footfall, with most shoppers flocking to the electronics items...

Walmart saw supply chain improvements this year after inventory levels were low during the 2021 holiday season, Walmart US CEO John Furner said in an earnings call in November.

But when we arrived just after 9am on Black Friday, the Walmart parking lot in New York looked pretty empty.

When we walked in we didn't see very many shoppers but there was security near the door.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
We skipped the main shopping area which was empty and didn't appear to have any special holiday offers.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
The clothing department also seemed pretty empty at first glance.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Finally we started to see other buyers near the kids clothes.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Dustbins in the middle of the aisles appeared to have some of the most popular offers and advertise "while supplies last".
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
These were mostly cheaper items than the typical Black Friday electronics deals.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Many of the offers were for bedding, pillows and other home accessories.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
While the sale of housewares didn't seem to find many takers, the toy department was much busier.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
The toy shelves were well stocked.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
The aisles of dolls and stuffed animals weren't particularly busy, but they were definitely one of the busiest areas of the store.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
By far the busiest area was the electronics department.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
There were some deals on TVs and video games.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Customers perused stacks of discounted games and DVDs while workers replenished their supplies.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Headphones and phone accessories also seemed popular due to the messy displays.
Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Aside from toys and electronics, I wouldn't have known there were any holidays or promotions.
