Simone Biles said she was "doing some internal work" after her early exit from the women's gymnastics team final.
Shortly after Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Grace McCallum won silver in Japan Tuesday night, Biles spoke briefly to reporters about the withdrawal after their first device.
When asked what she told her teammates about her retirement, Biles said her advice was, "You've done all of the practice, you can do this without me and it will be fine."
"They freaked out. They cried and I said, 'You gotta relax, you'll be fine without me, go out there and kick your butt just like we did in training .. And just hit that Lay the ground and see what happens! ' "said Biles to today's Hoda Kotb.
Despite not winning gold, Biles told reporters that she was "proud" of the performance of the rest of the team, finishing second behind the Russians. "For me, I'm proud of the way the girls performed and did what they had to do. I owe that to the girls, it has nothing to do with me," she said. "I'm very proud of her."
Lee remembered the moment when Biles told the team that they would not be competing for the rest of the finals. "I just thought, 'We have this,'" she told reporters. "We can go out there and show the world what we came here for."
Chiles also praised Biles, telling reporters that their silver medal "is definitely for them".
"Without her we wouldn't be where we are right now," she said. "We wouldn't be Olympic silver medalists - because of their personality, so kudos to you, girls."
Chiles added, "We are fighters, we've fought our way through this entire competition."

Speaking to reporters after the finale was over, Biles said she was "okay just doing some things in-house that will be fixed in the next few days."
She said she plans to return for Thursday's all-around final.
In a statement to PEOPLE and other news outlets, USA Gymnastics said that Biles' exit was for health reasons, but did not provide any further details: "Simone has withdrawn from the team final due to a medical problem. She is being examined daily for medical issues put." Free space for future competitions. "

Biles, the reigning all-around Olympic gold medalist and five-time Olympic medalist, ditched her scheduled Amanar jump for an easier 1.5 turn and scored a score of 13,766.
Then Biles was seen having an extended conversation with her trainer Cecile Canqueteau-Landi and the team trainer, alternately appearing with a petrified and insistent face as she spoke to the staff and teammates before and after briefly speaking with medical trainer Marcia Faustin was out.
Widely considered the most talented gymnast of all time, Biles returned in time for the finals Tuesday to watch and cheer on the US for her second piece of equipment, the uneven bars.
