A controversial tweet from a Cambridge University professor saying "White lives don't matter" was deleted by Twitter, she claimed.
Professor Priyamvada Gopal, an employee of Churchill College, caused a backlash after posting the tweet and said, "I'll say it again. White lives don't matter. How white lives."
Since her posting, the professor has received death threats and abuse while a petition has been filed asking for her to be released from the University of Cambridge.
It comes after a banner labeled "White Lives Matter" was flown over the Etihad Stadium in Manchester shortly after the kick-off between Manchester City and Burnley on Monday evening and triggered a police investigation.

Prof. Gopal later confirmed that the tweet had been deleted from Twitter, but said it was because it was more about "structure and ideology" than about people.
She wrote: “I also want to make it clear that I stand by my tweets, which are now being deleted by Twitter, not me.
“You spoke very clearly with a structure and ideology, not with people. My tweet said white is nothing special, not a criterion for making life important. I stand by it. "

The academic and activist also shared the abuse she received both publicly and privately after the tweet.
One person replied that she was "disgusting inside and out" and "If you don't like whites, pack your shit and go home. Problem solved."
Other examples were: "... kill yourself. Otherwise someone could show you what is really important :)"
"Why do you want to get rid of white at all? We gave you everything you own. Without us, you would still be hunting bush meat with a blowgun."

Prof. Gopal, who announced on Thursday that she had been promoted to full professor in the English department, was defended by the University of Cambridge and the University and College Union (UCU).
In a statement, the University of Cambridge said: “The university defends the right of its academics to express their own legitimate opinions that others may find controversial.
“[It] deeply regrets abuse and personal attacks. These attacks are completely unacceptable and must stop. "
The University and College Union (UCU) in Cambridge wrote: “Solidarity with Priyamvada Gopal - target is hideous sexist and racist abuse for speaking out against white Supremacists.
“We are proud to be your colleague both on the picket line and outside of it. #BlackLivesMatter #Solidarity. ”
However, some of the university's support for Prof. Gopal was criticized as inconsistent, with some pointing to the recent removal of Noah Carl from a research center at St. Edmund's College for connections to right-wing extremist groups.
