A Dutch poet will not translate Amanda Gorman's work after criticizing that it would be inappropriate for a white man to do so.
Marieke Lucas Rijneveld announced on Wednesday that they would translate the works on Twitter that Gorman had retweeted.
However, Rijneveld, the youngest author to ever win the International Booker Prize for the novel "The Discomfort of Evening", decided to step down on Friday.
Rijneveld said in a Twitter statement: "I am shocked by the uproar over my involvement in spreading Amanda Gorman's message and I understand people who are hurt by the election."
Dutch cultural activist and journalist Janice Deul was among those who criticized the decision.
In an opinion piece for the newspaper de Volkskrant, she said: "In order to take nothing from Rijneveld's qualities, but why not choose a writer who - like Gorman - is a spoken word artist, young, feminine and apologetically black."
Gorman's rise to fame first began when she performed her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of Joe Biden's President.
Gorman, the first national youth poet, recited her poem "Choir of Captains," which was dedicated to a teacher, an ICU nurse, and a US Marine Corps veteran in the Super Bowl.
The Dutch translation of the poem was due to be published on March 20th by the Amsterdam publisher Meulenhoff, AP.
Rijneveld would also translate Gorman's first collection of poems for publication on August 21, the Independent added.
