House Oversight Committee chairwoman Carolyn Maloney said Thursday that she was "incredibly proud" of how New York dealt with the Corona virus outbreak in nursing homes, and said the federal government should pay homage to the nation's leading death toll Long-term care facilities of the state are held responsible.
"I would like to respond briefly to the unsubstantiated attacks I heard on my home state of New York today," said Democrat Maloney during a hearing of the Coronavirus Subcommittee on Thursday. "The facts are clear. During this crisis, Americans died in nursing homes in all states in the United States. "
She added, "This is not a problem with a red or blue condition. It is a national problem. We urgently need a national solution. As for my home state ... I'm incredibly proud of New York's answer. "
New York issued an order on March 25 that prevented nursing homes from refusing to admit coronavirus patients based solely on their diagnosis. Critics said the order, which was partially reversed in early May, contributed to the massive death toll among nursing home patients in the state.
Maloney said New York's order was in line with federal guidelines, an allegation contrary to a statement by Seema Verma, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, who said in May that the state's order do not meet the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that prescribe nursing homes should only accept coronavirus-positive patients if they can take certain precautions.
"Our state followed the CDC guidelines, including nursing homes," said Maloney. "What we lacked was strong federal support to quickly bring tests and personal protective equipment to nursing homes to prevent the virus from spreading."
Maloney also noted that nursing home residents make up more than half of all corona virus deaths in many states across the country. However, she did not admit that New York admitted to knowingly counting nursing home deaths after tacitly changing its reporting rules in late April to count only those nursing home deaths that occurred in the facility.
Maloney's defense of New York came after Republican representatives Steve Scalise from Louisiana and Jim Jordan from Ohio criticized their state's policy during the hearing, which, according to The Associated Press, forced New York nursing homes to center over 4,500 coronavirus patients to take up the pandemic.
"On March 25th, Governor Cuomo's Health Department issued a deadly order that contradicted the CMS guidelines by instructing nursing homes to admit COVID-19 positive patients - an order that Governor Cuomo responded to for 46 days Withdrawal was waiting, "Scalise spokeswoman Lauren Fine told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
"The numbers don't lie: New York has seen 500% more deaths per capita in nursing homes than in Florida, for example, where the CMS guidelines have been followed," said Fine. "Congresswoman Maloney should put aside her partisanship and seek, together with Republicans, answers on how this deadly decision - which has a direct impact on her voters - could ever be made."
Maloney's office did not return a request for comment.
